# Math is Fast – MSC #1: By One More Than the One Before

1. What is the value of 23.512 to the nearest whole number.

Ans: The decimal part, 0.512 is more than half of 1, so the nearest whole number is one more than 23, the number before it, or 24.

2. What is the floor area of a square room measuring 45 ft on each side?

Ans: A = s2 = 452 =

The answer is in two parts: The first part is obtaining the multiplying the number before 5, which is 4 by one more than itself, 5. The second part is always 25 (5 x 5). A = s2 = 252 = 4 x 5| 5 x 5 = 20|25 = 2025 ft2

3. A parking lot has 26 slots per row. If it has 24 rows, how many vehicles can park in the lot?

Ans: n = 26 x 24 =

The units digit add up to ten and the ten’s digits are the same. By One more than the one before can be applied here.

n = 26 x 24 = 2 x 3|6 x 4 = 6|24 = 624 vehicles

4. 9 3/8 x 9 5/8 =

Ans: The whole number part is the same while the fractions add up to 1 .

9 x 10 | 3/8 x 5/8 = 90 15/64

5. A rectangular table measures 4′ 2″ by 4′ 10″. What is its area in square feet and square inches?

Ans: 2″ and 10″ make a whole foot, so this Sutra can be used here. 4′ 2″ x 4′ 10″ = 4′ x 5′ | 2″ x 10″ = 20 square feet and 20 square inches.
