# Percentages made easy

Many students avoid solving percentage problems because they involve converting the percentages into decimals leading to lengthy calculations. This is probably the reason that many competitors in the junior age group of the 3^{rd} International Vedic Mathematics Olympiad did not get the correct answer to this question.

**What is 36.4% of $25?**

**$9.10****$16.92****$18.20****$12.64****$8.30**

But just looking at the problem, an easy solution using the Vedic Sutra **Proportionately** is available.

In general, a question such as what is “x% of $y?”, will always give a value in $. It is just a matter of evaluating “x% of y.” Now, we have

**x% of y = (x/100)(y)**

** = (x)(1/100)(y)**

** = (x)(y)(1/100)**

** = (x)(y/100)**

** = (y/100)(x)**

** = y% of x**

Thus, 36.4% of 25 = 25% of 36.4.

Since 25% = 25/100 = 1/4, we can just divide 36.4 by 4 and get 9.1. Therefore, 36.4% of

$25 is $9.10, which is choice **A.**
